Dinner is done. The plates have been washed and the leftovers have generously been tossed to our dog, Fido. Now it's time to put a log in the fireplace, get into my pajamas, put my feet up and open a good book. But there is something missing, something sweet. I get up and look in the cupboards and see one of my favorite sights that I can see, Mcvities Jaffa Cakes.

I know that most of you Americans reading this site are wondering what the heck are Jaffa Cakes? Wasn't he the villain in Aladdin? No, the Jaffa Cake is something far greater than the Disney Company could ever invent. It's basically a delicious, flaky biscuit covered in a dollop of orange jam that this then covered in chocolate. Basically 3 of my favorite things piled on top of each other. The Jaffa Cake is the perfect dessert to have on hand for that sweet tooth in the family. It's also a great dessert to give to a friend that has never tried them. The Jaffa cake was launched in 1927 and is named after the Jaffa Orange. 1927 was a busy year for British Foods seeing the launch not only of the world famous Jaffa Cake, but Lucozade as well.

Finding Jaffa Cakes without having to take out a second mortgage is very difficult, so I'm happy to report that I've found a good supplier of a myriad of fine British foods here in the USA. Their company name is Poppies Pantry and they meet the big 3 requirements that I require a company has in order for me to give them my hard earned money; good customer service, pricing that is very affordable and a good selection of products. I've become the Jaffa Cake guy to these fine folks and they can set their watches to the frequency of my Jaffa Cake orders. There are about 7 other products that I will order regularly as well and every time Poppies Pantry delivers with prompt shipping and friendly service. They even gave me a magnet with their contact information on it, this way when my stomach tells me that it's time for Mcvities Jaffa Cakes, my magnet (placed conveniently on my refrigerator) tells me who to call.

At one point there were some limited edition flavored Mcvities Jaffa Cakes released, including strawberry, lemon-lime and even a blackcurrant flavor. While my favorite of the 3 limited flavors was strawberry, nothing comes close to the orange flavor that I have grown up with. I do sometimes with that they would do a milk chocolate coating on the cakes, as I'm not the worlds biggest dark chocolate fan, but the mix of the orange and biscuit really strikes a good balance on my palate. Jaffa Cake craze is so big in England that in 2010 a company released a vodka mixer called the "Stiffy's Jaffa Cake Vodka Drink," infused with the orange and chocolate flavors the same as the incredible Jaffa Cakes. I have not tried this yet, but maybe it will be something that Poppies Pantry decides to carry in the future.
